C H A R A C T E R;NAME: Sildar Hallwinter, aka Barry "Barold" Bluejeans
CANON: The Adventure Zone
POINT IN CANON: Post-series
AGE: Nebulous. Physically in his early-mid 50's, technically an extra hundred years older.
APPEARANCE: Fantasy Tom Arnold. A stout, chubby middle-aged man, wearing a red hooded robe, a white t-shirt, and blue denim jeans. A Home Depot kind of Dad.
Except for when he's a lich.
Then he's a bodiless figure, little more than a flowing, floating red robe with the hood pulled up, the only things visible inside a pulsing white light in the hood and skeletal hands. When he starts to lose his composure, this projection flickers, distorts and crackles with red electricity, and in extreme moments can even burst into flame as a kind of teleport function.
CANON HISTORY: A hundred years or so of story here.
CANON PERSONALITY: team dad
The first impression Barry leaves with people, based on appearances alone, is that of quite a mild person: however, keep in mind that this is mostly because this is in direct comparison to the Tres Horny Boys. Barry is a train wreck.
He is always and forever seeking to learn. No matter what about, or how taboo it might be, he will actively seek out information and be delighted with whatever he learns. He spent the better part of eighty years learning about the Light of Creation. He has been actively learning necromancy, something typically seen as a forbidden topic, and shows no shame in whatever he might currently be researching.
Which is about the
only thing Barry is shameless about. On the whole, he is actually quite awkward with people as a whole, and typically doesn't seem inclined to open up unless he knows someone well. (And given that it took him something like sixty years to admit to Lup that he likes her, that says a lot). Even though literally the entire
multiverse knows his story, where he came from, he's still not someone who's particularly inclined to openly bringing the subject up.
When he's not talking about himself, though, he's pretty confident and entirely open; again, because of how much he researches every little thing, he can talk about near any subject with confidence. With science especially, his confidence is very much justified.
However, he's also occasionally entirely unreasonable. Barry has a quiet stubbornness, when people want to do something he believes, through the power of Science, is objectively bad. And at the same time, will quite happily follow his girlfriend in jumping off a flying ship in order to go on a murderous rampage. There's very little in-between for what Barry thinks is a valid idea or not, and a large part of it seems to simply boil down to
execution.
He also is an intensely dedicated person - especially towards people he loves, or considers family. And a large part of what we hear of him during the entirety of The Adventure Zone is directly related to his needing to find the people he cares about, to help them and save them, working himself to falling asleep in the middle of a laboratory at fuck-off o'clock because he
had to keep trying. His self-care is frankly quite appalling - but then, when death is just a minor annoyance, rather than the literal end, there's some understandable lack of concern.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: After the Wedding in the final episode.
VETERAN?: Nope!
ABILITIES: hoo boyBarry is the Head Science Officer on the Starblaster; an interdimensional ship (like a yacht-ship). He is therefore a
brilliant scientist, as only the best of the best were chosen for the Starblaster's voyage, though it's not known what sciences he specifically can science. He is just the Science Guy.
Barry is a wizard. He has an incredible, overwhelming grasp of the school of
necromancy; alongside the rest of the IPRE, he created a powerful artifact powered by the Light of Creation: specifically, the Animus Bell, which can, at minimum, tear a person's life force from their body, and replace it with one's own. It no doubt has other powerful necromantic abilities attached to it as well, but none that we've seen. He's also shown to be at least
somewhat proficient with other schools of magic, such as Clerical spells (or at the very least, the spell Command)
Barry is a competent fighter. Definitely not on some Magnus level shit, as it's not his dedicated class, but still at minimum proficient with a longsword and heavy crossbow.
Barry is a
grim reaper. He is an underling of the Raven Queen, goddess of death, and his job involves rounding up people who try and break the natural cycle of death, such as necromancers. He gets a sick scythe and the ability to rip a whole in space to wherever he needs to be.
Barry is a
fucking lich. He is repelled by holy symbols, and anything remotely religious seems to be a bane unto him. He is capable of possessing human bodies - in fact, this is how he survives normally. By
possessing his own living, soulless body. He also has passive true-sight, though this only seems to apply to his lich form, and not when he's possessing someone. Possessing a body also mitigates the worst of the weakness to religion, though it still hurts a fucking
lot. In his lich form, he's also shown to have the ability to take active possession of other living beings, during which the victim don't remember what happened, but is otherwise unharmed.
Barry has literally zero sense of self preservation. He has spent one hundred years, most of which he died during, only to be revived again at the end of that year. He threatened to blow himself up just to hug his girlfriend, and has gone through
way too many bodies as he spends ten years trying to track the Grand Relics. This is likely because he is a lich, and that his mortality is not linked to his flesh vessel.
Barry is fluent in Common, Thieves Cant, and Animal Grunting. He also spent a year learning to become a prodigy at the piano.
INVENTORY:A red robe, a white t-shirt and blue denim jeams.
An old wand.
Glasses.
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Barry may already be eligible for Post-Mortem Possession, as this is a skill he is shown to be able to perform in canon thanks to being a lich. He may also qualify for Liminal Manipulation of some level, because he's been shown to be able to use the physical form of an emotion (specifically despair, shaped like smoke) to create a wild variety of objects, including furniture and doors.
Also we should work out something about what to do if his body gets destroyed on a Jaunt but he's still liching it up out there.

JUSTIFICATION:
Lovers: Barry has a whole lot of love to go around. He is the chief scientist on a ship that is powered by bonds, of friendship and love and family. He is literally given the moniker 'the Lover' in a prophecy in canon; and this is because he spends the better part of forty-seven years crushing on and pining after Lup, another member on the ship, before they finally get together. And it's his intense, unfailing love for her, and hers for him, that keeps him sane and functioning in his lich form when he doesn't have a body to possess. Barry is, quite literally, powered by love.
He even follows the Marseille traditions of Lovers, with both 'dilemma' and 'temptation' covered by the fact he made a necromantic artifact so powerful it would corrupt anyone who used it, and bears a huge amount of guilt for having done so; as well as the various crises and moments of self-doubt he faces trying to convince his best friends, who don't remember him, that they need to trust him.
Death: Barry is, in numerous ways, very strongly associated with death as a concept, as well as a personification. He is a lich (an undead creature), has physically died in many different ways across many different universes (and several times in one set one), and is currently working as a reaper for the Raven Queen, who is the goddess of death. His primary powerset revolves around necromantic powers as well, and he has a deep love of learning anything new relating specifically to it.
High Priestess: Love and relationships are, time and time again, the core tenants of Barry's entire being. His love and devotion to the other IPRE members is literally what sustains him. He's also shown repeatedly to be one of the more sensible and grounded characters in the group in a standard situation, and is acutely aware of his own flaws and weaknesses.
(Otherworldliness and supernatural vision are a little bit more literal, given lich).
VETO: Fool and Magician, already got em both.

ACTIONSPAM SAMPLE:
[There's a new voice on the network! Middle aged, kind of husky and very confused. Nothing particularly unusual about that last one, at least.]
So, um.
Hey, guys. This is Barry. Barry Bluejeans. [Yes, really.] I just-- I uh, just wanted to ask a few questions, about this place. Y'know, cos--
--cos what the hell is this, first of all? I-I've been to a lot of different universes now, and this is... This isn't one that I recognise. Is this some kind of demi-plane, or something? It doesn't make sense.
A-and, second of all, kind of a more important question, to me. Personally.
Has anyone seen an elvish woman in a red robe? Weirdly, like, unnaturally hot, might have already set something on fire? Because I-I kind of need her. A lot.
